And with that in mind, let's take a look at just what you have to choose from   - **Laptops** For a long time, laptop computers have been the go-to when it comes to mobile computers. Because they offer durability as well as the kind of hardware that lets you do just as much work as you would do on your desktop, they're perfect for extended business trips or [students](https://www.dsr-inc.com/laptops-for-college-students-maryland.html) who are going to be moving away from home for college.   - **Netbooks** These machines are like laptops, but smaller. With these, you give up power and some productivity capabilities for a smaller, lighter machine that makes a great companion to your desktop. Their design allows for simple tasks like email access and internet surfing on the go.   - **Tablets** Tablet computers are all about content consumption. If you want a machine that will allow you do things like download and read e-books, enjoy movies, and listen to music in addition to providing web surfing and email, then a tablet might be right for you. Thanks to a comparatively low cost, several different [computer manufacturers](https://www.dsr-inc.com/best-computer-brand-maryland.html) are bringing their own versions of tablet computers to the market, so you have as much variety as you would with laptops.   ## Choosing the Right Machine for You When it comes to making a decision concerning tablets vs. laptops, it all comes down to what you need out of a computer. So have a look at some key areas and that will help you decide which type of machine will best fit your needs.   - **Upgradability** It's no secret that computer technology moves fast. Because of that, some people will want to be able to upgrade their machines with time in order to keep up. In that respect, laptops offer expandability that allows you to do things like [add more RAM](https://www.dsr-inc.com/ram-replacement-maryland.html) for increased speed, or a [bigger hard drive](https://www.dsr-inc.com/hard-drive-replacement-maryland) to increase the amount of available storage space. That versatility can prove useful with time, so think about whether or not that’s something you're looking for in a computer before you buy.   - **Functionality** In the debate of laptops vs. tablets, it often comes down to the machine's functionality for many users. While a laptop will typical run a Windows operating system and an [Apple computer](https://www.dsr-inc.com/apple-laptop-repair-maryland.html) will typically run some version of the OS X operating system, many tablets on the market run the "Android" operating system, which has many of its own unique programs and applications. Knowing that, your question of what's better when it comes to tablets vs. laptops should come down to the programs that you'll need to use once you have a machine.   - **Portability** This is one of the main reasons many people look to purchase one of these machines, but what are the specific differences between the two types? When you factor weight into the argument of tablets vs. laptops, tablets are much lighter by comparison, with many offerings not exceeding 2 lbs in weight. This makes them easier to store in bags for transport, retrieve in small spaces such as the inside of a car, and put away when not in use. How portable you need your machine to be may come down to how much you travel and how long your trips are on average.   ## So What Will You Choose?
